  Kerry's statements threaten peace talks
Posted by: Newsroom - 04-11-2013, 12:11 PM - Forum: World News - No Replies

Damascus - The Syrian foreign ministry has denounced comments by US Secretary of State John Kerry on Syria, saying they could cause proposed peace talks on the 31-month conflict to fail.

A statement said that remarks by Kerry "threaten to cause the failure of the Geneva conference, are a flagrant violation of Syrian affairs and an aggression against the Syrian people's right to decide their future".

Kerry, who has been pressing for a peace conference about Syria in Geneva, said in Cairo that Washington and its allies may differ over "tactics" on the conflict, but they shared the goal of a handover of power.

"If the United States is sincere in its cooperation with Russia, Kerry must understand that only the Syrian people have the right to choose their political future, without foreign intervention," the ministry said.

"The success of (the proposed peace conference), Geneva II, depends solely on the Syrians' willingness to reach an agreement amongst each other, to put an end to violence and terrorism, and to reach a political solution," it added.

President Bashar Assad's government has brushed aside calls for his removal from power, branding peaceful opponents and armed rebels alike as "terrorists". – SAnews.gov.za-NNN-SANA

  Samantha Lewthwaite probe continues
Posted by: Newsroom - 03-11-2013, 09:09 PM - Forum: World News - No Replies

Investigations into how Samantha Lewthwaite, also known as the White Widow, obtained a South African passport are still on-going, Home Affairs Minister Naledi Pandor said on Sunday.

“We are continuing our investigations and once we are ready, we will make a statement as to what we have established,” said Pandor.

Speaking at the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security (JCPS) Cluster media briefing, Pandor said there have been improvements in the security of obtaining a South African passport.

“In the meantime, we have improved on the security with respect to the acquisition of a passport, as well as all the procedures relevant to an application for a passport,” said Pandor.

She said biometric checks are used when looking into the background of individuals who apply for passports.

Lewthwaite is suspected to be behind the bloody Westgate Mall terror attack in Kenya in September. The 29-year-old British woman allegedly used a South African passport, under the name Natalie Faye Webb, to enter Kenya.

The four-day siege left more than 60 people dead, including South African James Thomas, and over 170 were injured. About 15 suspected Al Shabaab terrorists have been detained by the Kenyan government.

The passport, which was obtained using fraudulent supporting documents, was cancelled in 2011 following an investigation by the Department of Home Affairs.

State Security Minister Siyabonga Cwele said that while investigations continue, work is being carried out to ensure that there is no destabilisation in the country.

“What we’d like to say is that in terms of the threat of terrorism, the State is working very hard to ensure that there’s no destabilisation inside South Africa. Of course, any terrorist grouping will always try to come with an element of surprise but we’re highly vigilant,” said Cwele. – SAnews.gov.za

Sub-Saharan Africa to gain growth in 2014
Posted by: Newsroom - 01-11-2013, 12:01 PM - Forum: Business and Finance - No Replies

Lagos - Economic activity in sub-Saharan Africa is predicted to remain robust at a 5% growth in 2013 and 6.2% in 2014, said the International Monetary Fund's latest Regional Economic Report Outlook published on Thursday.

The IMF said the latest outlook was not as strong as portrayed in the May 2013 edition, characterised by rising financing costs, less dynamic emerging market economies, and less favourable commodity prices, as well as diverse domestic factors.

"Growth is expected to be particularly strong in mineral-exporting and low-income countries, including Cote d'Ivoire, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mozambique, Rwanda, Sierra Leone and a few others," said Antoinette Monsio Sayeh, Director of the IMF's Africa Department.

"For example, in Nigeria, oil production is expected to increase in 2014 and electricity reform is advancing," Sayeh said.

The main factor behind the continuing growth in most of the region was, as in previous years, strong domestic demand, especially associated with investment in infrastructure and export capacity in many countries, the report added.

On inflation, the report said the region was expected to remain moderate in 2013 and 2014, reflecting continuing disinflation in low-income countries and benign prospects for food prices.

According to the report, headline inflation in sub-Saharan Africa has been on a declining trend since early 2012, facilitated by a slowdown and occasional reversal in food prices and the maintenance of tight monetary policies.

The report said fiscal deficits were also expected to expand in 2013 and 2014 in many countries in the region, adding that debt indicators remain benign in most countries. – SAnews.gov.za-Xinhua
