Manila - The number of people killed by Typhoon Haiyan, or Yolanda, in central Philippines has climbed to 3 974 as of Sunday noon, a military official said.
In addition, 1 186 people remained missing and 12 544 were injured, the country's Defence Administrator Eduardo del Rosario told media after a meeting of the Philippine National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).
The meeting, presided over by Executive Secretary Pacquito Ochoa and NDRRMC chairman Defense secretary Voltaire Gazmin, discussed issues involving the relief and rehabilitation efforts.
The military assured that measures were in place to ensure the security for the flow of fuel supplies.
Typhoon Haiyan, which struck the Philippines two weeks ago, is one of the most powerful storms on record to make landfall.
South African President Jacob Zuma has as expressed his condolences to President Benigno Aquino, the government and the people of Philippines. The Department of International Relations and Cooperation said its consular services were keeping in contact with the embassy for regular updates. – SAnews.gov.za-Xinhua
