Hong Kong cancels fireworks display amid protests
Posted by: Newsroom - 29-09-2014, 01:41 PM - Forum: World News - No Replies

Hong Kong - The Hong Kong government on Monday announced the cancellation of its National Day Fireworks Display on 1 October, amid protests.

Protests have been taking place in various areas in Hong Kong, occupying some of the main roads.

Protesters called for the withdrawal of the decision on Hong Kong's constitutional development made on 31 August by the National People's Congress Standing Committee.

The government said, in view of the latest situation, it is anticipated that main access roads leading to hot spots for viewing the fireworks display may continue to be seriously affected.

With regard to public transport arrangements and public safety considerations, the National Day Fireworks Display originally scheduled at Victoria Harbor on 1 October at 8pm local time will be cancelled, the government said.

The government has urged the demonstrators to disperse to allow emergency vehicles, public transport and other traffic to pass. Its statement followed calls from some protest organizers for people to return home. – SAnews.gov.za-Xinhua
