Pretoria - The African Union Commission Chairperson Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma has saluted the people of Kenya for the successful and peaceful conclusions of the elections.
“By turning out in their millions, they have made the people of Africa proud and have secured the Kenya they want,†said Dlamini Zuma in a statement.
The chairperson also congratulated the President-elect, Uhuru Kenyatta, the Vice President-elect William Ruto and the Jubilee Coalition for being declared the winners in the elections.
“We salute all participating candidates and parties for their contributions towards this important democratic process, held under Kenya's new Constitution,†she said.
Dlamini Zuma went on to hail the Independent Electoral and Border Commission, for conducting a complex electoral process.
Kenya's electoral body declared Kenyatta as the president of the Republic of Kenya on Saturday after he won 6.17 million votes to beat his closest challenger Raila Odinga in historic elections held on March 4, the very first to be organized under Kenya's 2010 constitution.
However the results were challenged by the defeated Odinga, who said after the official announcement, that the election was "tainted," and that he plans to challenge the election results in court.
Dlamini Zuma said she encouraged those who have raised concerns with the electoral processes to continue to do so through legal processes.
The March 4th polls were the very first to be held since the 2007/2008 post election violence, when, within a 7-week period following the polls, and as a direct consequence of the contested results, thousands of civilians became victims of serious crimes, including killings, sexual and gender based violence, forced internal displacements and destruction of properties.
“The AU Commission and indeed the people of the continent are proud of the achievements of the Kenyan people, and are certain that you will continue to maintain calm and peace.†- SAnews.gov.za-Xinhua

Caracas - The situation in Venezuela remains stable following the death of President Hugo Chavez, though his grieving supporters took to the streets, chanting slogans in memory of the socialist leader.
Vice President Nicolas Maduro, accompanied by key members of cabinet, announced on Tuesday the death of Chavez, who had battled with cancer for almost two years.
"At 4:25pm, the commander President Hugo Chavez [passed away]," he said, calling the event a "historical tragedy" and urging Venezuelans to be vigilant for the peace of the country.
Maduro called on Venezuelans to be vigilant for the peace of the country.
During a separate televised meeting of political and military leaders at the presidential palace, the vice president said that the "imperialist" conspirators, in alliance with domestic foes, had infected the president with cancer.
He said a panel will be set up to determine the causes of Chavez's illness.
In his speech, Defence Minister Diego Molero appealed for "unity, tranquillity and understanding" among Venezuelans.
He pledged that the armed forces will defend the constitution and respect Chavez's wishes.
The Venezuelan government declared seven days of mourning. Foreign Minister Elias Jaua said Chavez's remains will lie in state at a Caracas military academy until a formal funeral ceremony on Friday.
According to its constitution, Venezuela would hold a presidential election within 30 days but in the meanwhile, Maduro takes over presidential duties until then. – SAnews.gov.za-Xinhua
